the upcoming "Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights" movie - in theatres February
2004. |
The movie Dirty Dancing first hit theaters on August 25, 1987. Having cost only $6 million
dollars to make, it has grossed over $170 million to date, making it one of the most
profitable independent films of all time. Winner of 2 Academy Awards, a Golden Globe
and an ASCAP Award for Best Original Song ("I've Had The Time Of My Life"), music has
always been the heart of the movie and the core of its success.
What's surprising about the soundtrack, and undoubtedly one of the reasons for its enduring
popularity, is how it manages to incorporate both the music of the story's setting -
the summer of 1963 - as well as the popular sounds of the '80s, in a way that perfectly
fits the context of the drama. Not only does it satisfy the audience's need to see the
couple together in an almost musical ending to the story - and we get that, along with
one final, passionate kiss - but the scene brings all of the characters together: parents,
grandparents, children, spanning several generations at once. Times may change, the
fox trot may no longer be in style, but music and dance still has the power to unite
us regardless of the year we're living in.
Like the movie, the album, and the Dirty Dancing phenomenon, the ending brings people
of diverse backgrounds together through its irresistible appeal...one that will have
viewers and listeners dancing long into the 21st century. |
